Strategy Tip: A Guide To Leveraging Email Templates
As professional email marketers, one of the areas we pay close attention to is the look of an email in all different types of email clients, from Outlook to Apple Mail to Google, and more. No matter how your subscriber sees your email, on their phone or on their computer, we want to be sure that your email looks clean, professional and consistent.
The best way to achieve consistent presentation is by hand coding the email or campaign templates to ensure they perform consistently across all systems. But not every one of our clients can afford to have email campaigns hand-coded, especially those in small business and the nonprofit industries. But thanks to the advancements in technology from ESPs, there are plenty of options for creating a custom, branded look for your email campaigns using the tools provided by your ESP.
Mailchimp offers an excellent WYSIWYG builder that can create a beautiful, branded look without any coding knowledge, as well as an integration with Litmus for cross-client testing. Typically anything you create using the standard layouts from the builder will be compliant with the most popular email clients. Most providers also offer some type of standard email templates for occasions (e.g. birthdays, holidays) and industries (e.g. travel, ecommerce) that can be updated with your branding. Each of these, although they come with some design limitations, are configured to perform consistently across all standard email clients and operating systems. If you’re on a budget, these are a great resource to lean on that will ensure that you can still get maximum results from your campaigns, with minimal design or coding hassles.
